New media and social networking

United Nations & Social Media from Daniel G on Vimeo.

This is a video clip produced by Daniel George and the News and Media Division of the the Department of Public Information of the United Nations about the work of the department related to new media and social networking. Representing my team who is responsible, among other things, for the technical administration of some of the organization’s new media and social networking projects, I am discussing in the second segment of this clip (at around 1:50) some of the benefits of using new media tools like Twitter in public information campaigns.

Touching

This quote touched me. I find it very well written, short, poignant and colorful. I love the imagery and the wordplay. It is an excerpt from what seems to be an equally beautiful book titled Days with my Father by Phillip Toledano:

[My Uncle Ralph] was a vehement Republican, marooned on an island of vehement liberals. He’d always be savagely attacked at family gatherings. To his credit, he defended himself with admirable swordsmanship.

Gabe Bondoc

“I can? be the cop, you’re the robber since you stole my heart”

From Gabe and Ramiele Malubay’s original: You’re it. Simple, beautiful. Instant classic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFW7haf9iS8

Clara Chung

To sing like no one is listening, to dance like no one is watching, to eat like it won’t go straight to my thighs (or gut for dudes), and to love like I was designed to.

This is quoted straight from the YouTube profile of an amazing young artist. She is ferocious! Check her out: http://bit.ly/92Oy3A
Post-scriptum: Ferocious as in talented, beautiful and really really sweet of course. And oh yes, that stuff about guts, that’s my little customization of the quote. Hehe.

File sharing and security on a (large) USB external drive

Courtesy of serendipitee from CNET’s forum: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?threadID=246730

Follow the below instruction and restart computer.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
4. In the right pane, double-click the IRPStackSize value.
NOTE: If the IRPStackSize value does not already exist, use the following procedure to create it:
a) In the Parameters folder of the registry, right-click the right pane.
b) Point to New, and then click DWord Value.
c) Type IRPStackSize.

IMPORTANT: Type “IRPStackSize” exactly as it is displayed because the value name is case-sensitive.
5. Change the Base to decimal.
6. In the Value Data box, type a value that is larger than the value that is listed.

If you created the IRPStackSize value using the procedure described in step 4, the default value is 15. It is recommended that you increase the value by 3. Therefore, if the previous value was 11, type 14, and then click OK.
7. Close the Registry Editor.
8. Restart the computer.

Actually for me the solution worked only after changed the decimal value to 21.

Kina Grannis

One of my favorite past-times is to scour YouTube and the iTunes music store for indie, up-and-coming and little known (to me at least) artists. I discovered the likes of Jem, Kalai, Frank Bell and many others who have become playlist mainstays this way. With spare time being such a premium as of late, I haven’t had a chance to search and discover as much as I would like. But then yesterday was an exception. I came across this talented and equally beautiful young woman named Kina Grannis. You may have heard of her but I haven’t. One word: amazing. I highly recommend. Please check her site for more information: http://www.kinagrannis.com/

Short essay

Received this in my junk mail folder. Brilliant:

An English university creative writing class was asked to write a concise essay containing the following elements:

1. Religion
2. Royalty
3. Sex
4. Mystery

The prize-winner wrote: ‘My God,’ said the Queen, ‘I’m pregnant. I wonder who the father is.’

All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.

Bob Marley (or not?)

“You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before, she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect — you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together, but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break — her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there”

Wonderful quote attributed to Mr. Marley (although some on the Internet claim it isn’t his). Beautiful nonetheless!

Repeat

Just a quick note to congratulate the Los Angeles Lakers on their repeat performance as NBA champions. Didn’t I say so? Indeed, Lakers in seven it was. But boy, what a seven!

I followed the NBA seasons fairly regularly since 1996 and never missed the finals. This is one of the best — if not the best — game I have ever had the privilege of watching: gritty, defensive not always pretty but flat-out competitive basketball. Both teams played their hearts out and the Celtics left it all on the floor. Doc coached his squad really well and they deserve more than the customary polite accolade they received: this Boston squad epitomized by the efforts put in by their hard-nosed floor general worked their butts off but lost to the better team.

In my opinion, old age finally caught up to the Celtics squad and obviously they missed Perk’s presence down low. Nonetheless, the Lakers played as a team — a repeat championship team — especially on a night that 24 was off (offensively at least). I believe Pau, with a couple of big-time plays in traffic down low in the fourth quarter, emphatically shed that so-called soft label the media stuck on him since that embarrassing 39-points drubbing at the hands of the Celtics two years ago; and Ron-Ron silenced the critics with a gutsy long-range bomb — also in the fourth. Fish — being Fish of course — saved the day by swinging the momentum once and for all the Lakers way with yet another 3-point dagger.

Enough said: well-played, Celtics but go Lakers!!!!
